Common claims about foxes

“Urban foxes are taking over”

Urban foxes are real and long-established; the numbers are less dramatic than the coverage. Foxes colonised British towns during the twentieth century and urban populations are a genuine and studied phenomenon, not a recent invasion. Fox density in towns is limited by territory rather than by food: a territory holds one family group, and additional food does not straightforwardly produce additional groups. That is why feeding tends to change the behaviour of the foxes already present rather than the number of them.

“Foxes are dangerous to children”

Injuries to people occur and are very rare. The incidents that reach national coverage are individually real and each one is serious for the family involved. They are also rare enough that each is national news, which is itself the useful indicator. A fox in a garden is not, on the published evidence, a public safety emergency, and this site does not tell anyone how to feel about one being there.

“Foxes will kill my cat”

Adult cats are very seldom taken. Foxes and cats commonly share urban space and generally avoid each other; an adult cat is a poor prospect for a fox. Kittens, small pets left out, and poultry are a different matter, and poultry in particular is the one where the concern is well founded: a fox in a hen house will kill more birds than it can eat, which is the behaviour most often cited as evidence of wantonness and is in fact ordinary surplus killing in a confined space the birds cannot escape.

Secure housing is the measure that works for poultry. The Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996 governs how a fox may lawfully be dealt with; snaring is separately regulated and differs by nation.

“Culling controls fox numbers”

This is contested and the argument is about replacement. The case against is that a territory vacated is taken by another fox, so local killing produces turnover rather than reduction; the case for is that sustained pressure in a defined area reduces local density. Both positions are argued by people who work with the species. This site reports that the question is disputed and does not settle it.

“A fox with mange should be put down”

Sarcoptic mange is treatable and treatment in the wild is routine. Fox charities treat mange in free-living animals, and an animal in early stages can recover. A fox in the late stages is a different case. If you are seeing a fox losing fur, the useful step is to contact a fox rescue rather than to decide.
